Oteha Valley Road is one of the arterial roads linking Albany with the Northern motorway and East Coast Bays suburbs. It is a key transport route for people commuting to work at local businesses, to the Park & Ride connection to Auckland CBD, to major retail centers like Westfield mall, and for children to get to and from school.

There have been two fatalities on Oteha Valley Road within two months this year involving either a cyclist or pedestrian. In April,  Christine Ovens was struck and killed while walking to public transport near Northcross. In May, 15-year-old Nathan Kraatskow died after being hit by a car at the State Highway One intersection while cycling home. The first was a mother and wife, the second a son and brother.

These deaths are not a result of unfortunate accidents, but avoidable circumstances, where people have had to place themselves at unreasonable risk in the course of daily activity. We are now demanding for the safety of the community, that protected bicycle lanes and safer pedestrian crossings are installed along the full length of Oteha Valley Road.

Oteha Valley Road average traffic volume per day = 37643

Number of people in the Upper Harbour Board Area >58500

Education centers in area, possibly serviced by Oteha Valley Road:

-          Albany Primary School

-          Albany Senior High School

-          City Impact Church School

-          Kindercare Albany

-          Massey University

-          North Cross Intermediate School

-          Oteha Valley School

-          Pinehill School

Two deaths in two months!

Call to Action
The desired result of this petition is protected cycle lanes, and frequent access to safe pedestrian crossings, along the full length of Oteha Valley Road.

We are calling on Auckland Transport, and the Upper Harbour Local Board, to fund the installation of these facilities to improve the safety of people of all ages who use Oteha Valley Road for transport by foot or bicycle.

Albany’s population is growing. Local businesses are seeing the uptake of employee e-bike use for commuting, and local schools are encouraging children to ride their bicycles to school. This demand must be met with infrastructure that allows for the safe movement of groups like these, and in accordance with Auckland Transport’s goals of reducing car dependency, improving community health, and delivering an effective and efficient transport system that enables Aucklanders to make informed transport choices.
