Grace Elliott started this petition to SFMTA and

Did you know that teachers must move their cars every two hours during a school day when they simultaneously need to be taking care of their students? Many teachers take public transportation to work, but for those who have too many supplies to lug, live out of the city due to high living costs, or carpool, they must drive their car. This is why we need to make parking passes available to all teachers in their school's neighborhood.

Currently, SFMTA allows only a few of the many city teachers to obtain parking passes for their school's neighborhood. This seemingly arbitrary number of permits per school is determined by the number of parking spaces on the street/block of the school excluding any white or blue zones. This means a school of 30 teachers may only get 3 passes to share among all the staff members.

All teachers who need a neighborhood permit should be able to buy one, just like nannies already do!

Since the city has been trying to find ways to address the teacher shortage, (planning teacher housing, for example), why can't we start small and give teachers an opportunity to stay at work the whole day without the interruption to move their cars?

I hope this petition gives SFMTA a better bottom line by allowing more purchasers of a teacher permit, but more importantly, I hope this petition keeps more teachers in San Francisco. They can't afford to live here, and we can't afford to lose them.
