Petitioning Seventeen Magazine

Promote a positive image of transgender youth.

As a transgender reader of Seventeen Magazine, I was appalled when, in 2009, the article titled "My Boyfriend Turned Out to be a Girl" was published, using offensive terms such as "he-she" to describe a Female-to-Male transgender. I'd love to see Hearst and those at Seventeen promote a positive portrayal of transgender people as regular people. As a Male-to-Female transgender, I feel that I am no less female than any biological female I know. And I feel that if Seventeen were to treat Male-to-Female transgender people as females and Female-to-Male transgender people as males, it would give many transgender readers a much-needed boost in self-perception.

I'd love to see Hearst and those at Seventeen promote a positive portrayal of transgender individuals as regular people. As a Male-to-Female transgender, I feel that I am no less female than any biological female I know. And I feel that if Seventeen were to treat Male-to-Female transgender individuals as females, and vice-versa, it would give many transgender readers a much-needed boost in self-perception.
