To the Leaders of the Seven Siblings Colleges,

We are members of the 9,000+ member “Seven Sisters Together” Facebook group, which came together shortly after the 2016 election in an effort to resist the damage already being done to America by our country’s newly-elected president, Donald Trump.  At that time, probably none of us could have imagined the level of division that could have been incited by Trump and degree of injury inflicted on the nation and the world in just the short period that has since passed.

We were recently inspired to see the attached statement released jointly by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the Dean of Washington National Cathedral, and the Canon Theologian of Washington National Cathedral, entitled  “Have We No Decency?  A Response to President Trump.”  The statement says that they have had enough, and they must now speak out.  It includes the following lines:

“When does silence become complicity? What will it take for us all to say, with one voice, that we have had enough? The question is less about the president’s sense of decency, but of ours.”

Many of us alumnae/i and students of your colleges speak out regularly on social media and on other public forums about the heinous rhetoric, unconscionable actions, and true atrocities being committed by the Trump administration.  We need not enumerate them here.  But we rarely see groups of leaders – whether faith leaders, educational leaders, business leaders or others – speak out together about them.  In truth, college presidents have powerful voices to effect change.

We call on you to speak out together now as one.  And further, we ask that you use your voices and your relationships to engage other college and university presidents throughout the country to join you in a statement of your own, in your own words, but with one voice, telling your constituents, the nation, and the world, that you too have had enough.  The cost of silence on these issues is far greater than the cost speaking out.  If there was ever a time to use your voices for the greater good, it is now. We look forward to your response.
