The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test for admissions for prospective graduate applicants who are interested in pursuing a masters or a doctoral degree. The GRE costs applicants $205 and measures tests verbal reasoning, qualitative reasoning, and analytical. The main purpose of the GRE is to predetermine students success in graduate school.
Several research studies conducted by Stanford, University of Florida, and New York University have shown that the GRE undervalues the success of minority students. Specifically people of color, low-income, female, and those with mental disabilities. These factors, included with the financial burdens already placed on students are the reasons many universities have already abolished the GRE from their MSW application process.
The social work students at Fresno State, with the support of the National Association of Social Workers student coalition 23 Strong, require your advocacy in signing the petition to eliminate the GRE at Fresno State. As part of the admissions process for the MSW program, the GRE is unethical and holds no significant value in determining student success in graduate school.
Moreover, the GRE is contradictory to the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics:
“Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. Social workers' social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice. These activities seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers strive to ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equality of opportunity; and meaningful participation in decision making for all people.”
