Natural disasters cause many to be marginalized and vulnerable to resources and services. The LGBTQIA+ community have been excluded and repressed and face isolation, secrecy, lack of medications, non-affirmation of gender or pronouns, harassment, violence, discrimination etc. due to their gender, gender expression and sexuality. This is particularly true in Haiti as the LGBTQIA+ community have been affected greatly after certain natural disasters such as the earthquake that hit Haiti, January 12, 2010. SEROvie, a non-profit organization based in Port-au-Prince, works to create community centers for MSM, lesbian/bisexual women and transgender people where they can feel accepted and safe. Providing basic necessities such as food, water, shelter and safety and teaching how to clean water and keep living spaces clean are all goals of the organization.

With this petition, I hope to not only bring awareness to the fact that LGBTQIA+ people experience natural disasters differently than heteronormative people, but also create recognition towards SEROvie as a whole. The organization also creates awareness and protection towards HIV while destimgmatizing the demonization of gay and bisexual men to HIV infection. I also plan to share this among my own local communities and organizations, and I encourage you to do the same.

I'm including a link to the Facebook page of SEROvie to help gage the information and resources that the organization offers.
