That ALL of Cochamo Valley be a ZOIT (Zone of Touristic Interest)
In Chile, there exists the denomination called a ZOIT (Zone of Touristic Interest) in agreement with Article 13 of the Lay N. 20.423 of 2010, that recognizes community, intercommunity or determined areas within these, that have special tourist attraction conditions and that require measurements of conservation and an integrated plan to promote investments in the private sector.
Cochamo Valley - for various years - counts on the polygon ZOIT (a polygon is a perimeter of various sides defining the ZOIT). This ZOIT polygon never was institutionally worked from various state and communal instances, in spite of the numerous concrete initiatives of sustainable tourism undertaken by its inhabitants, nor was it updated.
The term to renew the condition ZOIT of Cochamó expires in December 2019.
In the process of citizen participation to analyze and modify the polygon, appeared Robert Hagemann saying that he would like to exclude his property (close to a third of the community area) from the ZOIT, despite the fact that much of this land was acquired by the businessman after their tourism development and without Hagemann having the legal certainty of possession of the lands he wants to exclude. On the other hand, without mediating participation or observation of sectors surrounding the power line and the Canutillar Power Plant, they were obscurely excluded from the polygon presented by businessman Roberto Hagemann.
What will be the fate of these territories, without the help of community interests, other than the removal of protected area status of Cochamó Valley? Neighbors of Cochamó are raising technical and historical arguments to reject Hagemann's proposal, and the citizen groups of the Cochamó Valley are voicing their interest that ALL THE COMMUNITY of Cochamó be a ZOIT. By signing, we are part of an international movement to support the local community’s interest.
