Judith Wilson started this petition to NHS and

My husband is in the middle of a very long recovery period. He has had sepsis twice, so far, and is extremely lucky to have survived, having had two 'life saving' surgeries (the surgeons' words, not ours), multiple organ failure resulting in being put on life support while in Critical Care, c.diff. and a collapsed lung due to a chest infection. He has recently had a six hour long abdominal operation to try to resolve the problem once and for all but he has been told that further surgery is likely next year. The irony is that, thanks to being sent home by a consultant on his very first admission to A&E by ambulance, having been told that there was nothing wrong, he could very easily have died.

Throughout this terrifying ordeal, I have learned much about sepsis and have read countless heartbreaking and horrific stories about what other families have had to endure. There have been a few items on television but none of them has emphasised how much stress is put on the family and friends of the sepsis survivor, or told of the tremendous psychological impact, as well as the physical impact, on him/her as well. Our lives will never be the same again - every risk of infection brings with it the fear of sepsis returning.

We visited our GP's practice a few days ago to have my husband's dressing changed and I made a point of looking round the various displays by the individual surgeries - there was not a single poster or leaflet about sepsis ANYWHERE. It is the same story when it comes to pharmacies...I have visited several over the past ten months and you can find leaflets about everything EXCEPT sepsis. I emailed the UK Sepsis Trust to ask if they had any plans to organise distribution of information to hospitals, GP surgeries and pharmacies but, to date, I have not had a reply.

This is such an important issue affecting so many thousands of people so badly that I think there should be as much information available as possible in as many places as possible and these three sites are the obvious choice. I hope that this petition might force those with the power to do something to actually give people the knowledge they need to be able to stop people from being seriously disabled or dying. It is essential to accurately diagnose sepsis as quickly as possible and, at the moment, different lists of symptoms are given out which are not always easy to understand. The first few hours are important, especially the first hour, so PLEASE can we all be given the power to make the correct decision at home or wherever we are in our busy lives - people ARE dying when they needn't. Knowledge is power.
