Send Boise State University to the Pac-12

Boise State University has established itself as a part of the upper echelon of most major sports over the last 20 years. Since 1997, Boise State has won over 20 conference championships in at least 7 different sports, including men’s and women’s sports. Boise State regularly sends athletes to the professional world in football, basketball, and soccer. I propose that Boise State University change its conference affiliation from the Mountain West to the Pacific-12.

Despite bringing in almost $20 Million less from athletics annually than the lowest performing school in the Pac-12, Boise State still regularly performs at a very high level in every sport. The school could use that extra money to attract even better recruits, better professors, and help build better facilities to bring about an even more positive educational experience for students.

Boise State often feels hard done because the school performs at a high level in every format; however, because it is a part of the Mountain West, the school has a difficult time being seen as a “true opponent.” One clear example of this is the school’s football team. In the current post-season format, it is difficult for a team in a Group of Five conference to consistently have great opponents. In 2017, Boise State only had the opportunity to play 3 ranked opponents, only 1 of which was in their own conference and that was in the Mountain West Championship game. With Boise State joining the Pac-12, they would face ranked opponents on a weekly basis, which would help make all teams involved better.

If Boise State University were to join the Pac-12, it would benefit not only the school, but the conference as well, as it would bring in another western state that the conference has yet to tap into. Geographically, it makes perfect sense as well, as the furthest opponent the school would face is the University of Arizona, which is roughly only 1000 miles school to school. That is almost 500 miles less than the distance from the University of Washington to that same school.

Boise State University changing its conference affiliation from the Mountain West to the Pacific-12 is the most obvious choice for all parties involved. If the conference were to rebrand to the Pac-13, it would set itself apart from other conferences in the nation, and it would show that it is interested in continuing the tradition of truly being “The Conference of Champions.”
