Senators need to multi-task like moms; Make gun control legislation a priority

The shooting in Newtown wasn’t the only mass shooting in America in 2012 – it was the 16th. Every day, eight American children are shot and killed in America. We have reached a tipping point — we must admit that gun violence isn’t a series of one-off tragedies, but an epidemic caused by unregulated access to guns and ammunition in an already violent culture. Too many times we have mourned the lives of those killed by guns and then moved on quickly without making the kind of meaningful change that would prevent us from repeating this cycle over and over again.

We are writing to urge you to keep gun control at the forefront of the legislative agenda, despite recent remarks by Sen. McConnell that gun control legislation would have to move to the "back-burner" during the debt discussions; despite Sen. Heitkamp's comments that our country should focus on mental health "before we start talking about gun control;" and Sen. Cruz's comments that any new gun control proposals would be "unconstitutional."

But this time will be different, this time mothers are saying, "Enough." Moms are demanding action.

Sen McConnell, Sen. Heitkamp and Sen. Cruz: We have waited too long to fix these problems. We won't wait anymore. We know our country's economic issues need attention. We also know, as moms, how to multi-task. We expect Congress to do the same.

We are asking you today to make a promise to the mothers of America: Help us create reasonable and enforceable gun laws that allow us to safely send our precious children out of our arms and into their schools, movie theaters, malls, and universities. It is said that a mother’s love for her child is unstoppable; be sure that One Million Moms for Gun Control is as well.
