@SenatorDurbin: Resist Trump’s unconstitutional regime change war on Venezuela

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin praised President Trump’s decision to try to encourage a military coup in Venezuela by withdrawing diplomatic recognition of the country’s internationally-recognized government. Reporting by the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post indicates that the Trump Administration coordinated with the Venezuelan opposition in order to try to encourage a military coup. Durbin’s immediate embrace of Trump’s move suggests Durbin may have participated in the Trump Administration’s planning to encourage a military coup.
California Democrat Ro Khanna responded to Senator Durbin that “the US should not anoint the leader of the opposition in Venezuela during an internal, polarized conflict.”
Hawaii Democrat Tulsi Gabbard responded: “The United States needs to stay out of Venezuela. Let the Venezuelan people determine their future. We don't want other countries to choose our leaders--so we have to stop trying to choose theirs.”
Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar responded: “A US backed coup in Venezuela is not a solution to the dire issues they face.”
California Democrat Barbara Lee responded: “I am gravely concerned by the Trump Administration’s interventionist approach toward Venezuela and strongly oppose any use of U.S. military force in the country.”
Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders responded that the U.S. should “not be in the business of regime change or supporting coups.”
Senator Durbin’s enthusiastic embrace of the Trump Administration’s regime change war on Venezuela contradicts Durbin’s obligations to enforce the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Resolution. Venezuela has not attacked the United States. Under the Constitution, Congress, not the President, is supposed to decide when to use military force. Durbin's embrace of Trump's war on Venezuela has increased the danger of a U.S. military attack on Venezuela. To fulfill his responsibility to the Constitution, Senator Durbin should be insisting that Congress debate and vote before the Trump Administration escalates further.
Urge Senator Durbin to fulfill his responsibility to the Constitution to prevent Trump's unauthorized war on Venezuela by signing our petition.
