One Nation under The Southern Cross

In addition to recognition of Aboriginal Elders past and present as custodians of our Land, there must also be recognition of our British heritage, and of Australia’s explorers, pioneers and migrants from many countries.

We Australians are one people.
But many Australians feel unhappy that their ancestry is not recognised in either the Welcome to Country, or the Acknowledgement of Country.

This petition aims to gain support for a change from the informal Acknowledgement of Country to a formal Acknowledgement to be adopted by government and non-government organisations on formal occasions, following Welcome to Country.

This statement to read:

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past and present with respect for them as custodians of the land on which this meeting/event is being held, and we recognise their continuing connection to their Land since the Dreamtime. We also acknowledge our British heritage in the foundation of our Nation, and the explorers and pioneers of our country, and their descendants, together with migrants from many lands and their descendants who helped develop our Nation, one people under The Southern Cross. We acknowledge the Federal Commonwealth of Australia, created by the nation under the Crown to guard the liberty of all citizens.

This petition to be presented to the Australian Parliament by Senator the hon. Eric Abetz
