Replace NAPLAN with direct instruction programs and change pedagogy.

After 10 years of NAPLAN nothing has changed. We know that the major eastern sea board states and territories of Australia perform better than other states. There has been little or no improvement in educational attainment of indigenous groups and students from low socio-economic areas. Teachers and educators knew before NAPLAN was introduced in 2008 where funding needed to be directed, but after billions have now been spent on NAPLAN nothing has changed. Our politicians of both sides have this insatiable desire to follow everything USA or England and yet on comparative international measures we have always done better than these two countries. NAPLAN and league tables have come from these countries who have now dispensed with them or soon will and yet Australia continues to use it as a measure to 'beat with a stick' and shame schools with low scores.NAPLAN is the invention from a dry economic time where there is this belief all kids can and will learn at the same rate and all come to the learning table with same opportunities, equity and ability.Enough is enough! Stop NAPLAN now and re- direct the billions into direct intervention programs that make a difference for those who need it most.Look to countries like Finland and Singapore for changes in pedagogical practices for teachers and restrict free market universities in Australia who use school education degrees as 'cash cows,' lowering ATAR entry,so that those who should not teach are being allowed to undertake these degrees. Start valuing teachers and stop shaming schools and teachers and start helping them improve the lot of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged!
