Encourage Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown to oppose the Senate Health Bill

This petition had 530 supporters

As citizens of Ohio, we are urging Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman to oppose the recent Senate health care bill and to work together to enhance the Affordable Care Act and to ensure that the most vulnerable in our nation have access to quality and affordable health coverage. This proposed Senate bill places more Ohioans at risk of losing health coverage with the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), estimating that up to 22 million people would lose coverage by 2026 and a per capita cap for the Medicaid program beginning in 2020 resulting in more challenges and costs to our states.

This situation is also particularly staggering for Ohio as we are one of the top states facing an unprecedented Opioid crisis.

There are many reasons to oppose this bill:

-Cuts federal funding for expanded Medicaid, which would effectively force states to end their Medicaid expansions and puts in jeopardy the 700,000 people who gained coverage through the Medicaid expansion.

-Proposes per-capita caps to Medicaid funding impacting all who depend on Medicaid especially low-income children, seniors and individuals with disabilities.

-Forces people with preexisting conditions to choose plans that are too expensive to afford for many people.

-CBO findings suggest that insurance premiums will go up and the tax credits that help make Marketplace coverage more affordable will go down and that no insurers would participate in the nongroup market or insurance would be offered only with very high premiums.

-Allow states to opt out of an essential health benefits list that all insurance plans must cover and allow insurers to reinstate annual and lifetime limits on coverage. Anyone with a plan allowing lifetime limits could be one health crisis away from exhausting their health benefits.

-Limits a currently uninsured person from getting coverage. Persons who do not show “continuous coverage” will have to wait 6 months or longer for coverage.

We implore our state’s U.S. Senators to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 and instead work toward a bipartisan process and solution that is transparent and provides quality care for all.
