Senator Jim Merritt: Stop supporting the NRA over Indy families

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

In the wake of two tragic mass murders this month, public opinion polls show that support is growing for common-sense gun regulations at every level of government. However, as other cities across the country explore locally-based solutions, Indy’s hands are tied after Senator Jim Merritt supported a 2011 bill prohibiting cities and towns from adopting local firearm regulations.

Worst of all, when Senator Merritt was asked to reconsider his vote and support Indianapolis getting the chance to consider local ordinances impacting violent gun crime, he doubled down:

  • Merritt voted in favor of that legislation in 2011 as a member of the Indiana State Senate. Whitley Yates, a spokesperson for his campaign, said he would still vote the same way today.

When given the choice, Senator Merritt chose his friends at the NRA over giving Indianapolis a chance to even consider action to stop mass shootings.

SIGN THIS PETITION TO ASK SENATOR JIM MERRITT TO DROP HIS SUPPORT FOR THE NRA AND SUPPORT LETTING OUR CITY HAVE OUR GUN REGULATION RIGHTS RESTORED.

In addition to voting to prohibit Indiana’s cities and towns from passing local regulations when it comes to gun violence, Senator Merritt has a long history of embracing pro-gun legislation, including voting for more guns in the workplace [1], more guns in schools [2], and more guns in churches [3], in addition to "stand your ground" legislation that would allow the use of deadly force against local police [4]. Senator Merritt has also consistently received high ratings from the NRA, earning a 93% score just last year.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO SEND A MESSAGE TO SENATOR JIM MERRITT THAT IF HE WANTS TO BE INDY'S MAYOR, HE NEEDS TO START REPRESENTING THE PEOPLE OF OUR CITY, NOT THE NRA.
