A Wall is a Wall

In March 2018, Congress approved $1.6 billion for border wall construction on the US-Mexico border, with most Senate democrats approving the bill--including Maryland Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin. Yet Senator Van Hollen's office claimed, in a constituent letter dated June 7, 2018, that no funding in the Fiscal 2018 budget bill could be used for border wall construction.
Follow up conversations with Van Hollen's office revealed that the congressman was making a distinction between a "Trump border wall" of the new prototype designs, and the border wall designs that have been constructed on the US-Mexico border for the past decade, largely with the approval of democratic members of Congress.
Senator Van Hollen: border walls by any name hurt borderlands communities and our relationship with Mexico; walls, "fences," and other solid barriers endanger wild species and ecosystems; walls are also a waste of taxpayer dollars because they don't stop people. Militarization and walls have precipitated the deaths of more than 7500 migrants since the 1990s and funding for out-of-control militarization has led to the unspeakable zero-tolerance policy that now rips children from their parents at the border.
When your constituents say they don't want a border wall, they mean they don't want any border wall, not just a wall conceived of by our current president. Please stop misleading constituents and stop approving funding for border wall construction and militarization of our southern border with Mexico.
