Sarah Carmany started this petition to Ms Sarah Carmany

I have just signed the following petition to Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell and the US congress in support of House  Resolution 582 "Raise the wage act" and Senate bill 150 which will raise the wage over time to $15.00 an hour. Today the middle class along with workers with disabilities and the direct care workers and many more are working extremely hard and don't get  paid  enough to afford to make a living such as to buy food, a place to live, healthcare, and the basic necessities to support life due to the cost of living going sky high to the point that things are outrageously overpriced.I mean you take the average American worker who gets paid $27.16 an hour or a tipped employee who has most of their pay made up with tips from customers which is more than $30. 00. But the employer of  tipped workers is required to pay them $2.13 in direct wages only if the tipped workers tips equals the federal minimum wage. Or a direct care worker  who comes into the home of a disabled or an elderly person"s home to help assist them with personal care that get's paid $9.50 or  $10.00 an hour on average which some states set the minimum wage higher than the federal minimum. When the states set their own minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage the states minimum wage takes over the federal minimum wage which is why direct care workers get paid $9.50 or $10.00 an hour. Then there's the people with disabilities who work in sheltered workshops who get paid $2.75, $0.04, $1.00 an hour on average due to their employer holding a special wage certificate called a 14c certificate which lets the employer legally pay person with disabilities below minimum wage also called a pace rate.

Now with all of these people in these jobs working hard some of them are working two jobs or more just to make it and still struggling to make it while others are working hard for nothing at these rates. This shows that people in the middle class are working hard and not earning enough as a result of  the cost of living going up which then leaves everything over priced and no one buying which then leaves stores either going under or out of business.                                                                 The US Congress has introduced a bill that is called House Resolution (HR) 582 also known as Raise The Wage Act which has already passed the US house and is now in the US senate with no action being done as of yet. This bill would gradually over time raise the federal minimum wage to $15.00 an hour which would help tipped workers , personal care workers and everyone else including people with Disabilities work and get a fair wage and phase out the 14c certificate that all employers especially in sheltered workshops hold that legally allows employers to pay subminimum wage to persons with disabilities. If we could get House Resolution 582 "Raise the Wage Act" into law then everyone can work and get a better wage and people with disabilities that are able to work and be employed within the community can work which will help them become more included within the community in which they live. Plus if we give people with disabilities who are able to work a decent wage and let them work with in the community then these people wouldn't have to go into state funded institutions. Then if we could give the direct care workers or care givers a fair wage then the people with disabilities who needs direct care workers can then be serviced within their homes or group homes and live an independent life and  wouldn't have to go into state institutions either.                      We need to strongly encourage the US Senate and Senate Majority leader  Mitch McConnell  to start taking action on this bill ASAP so we all could all have a better future and a better life for those who are working hard and not being able to support the basic necessities of life and hopefully help the economy of this country to become better and be on the road to recovery and help the workforce become more stronger and more encouraging for future generations including abled body people with disabilities.By signing this petition and telling our stories we can make our voices heard.
