Anti-Semitism in New Jersey continues to rise; in 2019, New Jersey had the third-highest number of incidents of anti-Semitism in the United States. According to a recent Anti-Defamation League report, in 2016 and 2017, there were a combined 365 crimes against Jews of all ages that included assault, vandalism, and harassment in New Jersey alone. And in 2017, 63 anti-Semitic incidents were targeted towards students in grades K-12.

For this reason, we, as Jewish students, Jewish adults, and allies of the Jewish community find it imperative that the Senate passes the S4001 Bill introduced to the New Jersey state legislature and currently under review by the Senate Education Committee. This bill protects students in public schools and universities from attack and discrimination based on their Jewish identity, including the expression of "hatred toward Jewish people, rhetorical, and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism directed toward a person, a person’s property, or toward Jewish community institutions or religious facilities”. The S4001 Bill ensures that no student will be harmed, bullied, punished, or attacked for their religion. This bill helps us work toward a future in which our students are protected from any form of intolerance so that they can do what they do best: learn.

By signing this petition, you commit to standing with Jewish students in the state of New Jersey who are in danger of being subjected to anti-Semitism. No student, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or background, should be punished for what they believe in
