Support the creation of a quality, dignified long-term care system
Every eight seconds, someone in America turns 65. And here in Missouri, where I live, over one in eight people are 65 or older. By 2030 more than 20% of the state's population will be over 65. Some experts call this “the silver tsunami.” And as a country and a state, we’re not ready for it.
That’s why I need your help.
I'm going to visit Senator Claire McCaskill this Wednesday and ask her to support Senate Resolution 128, which calls for the creation of a long-term care system that makes quality care affordable and accessible, to support people like my parents.
I’m just starting to raise my own family in St. Louis—I have a 10 month old son—and at the same time I worry about my parents, who live 400 miles away in Oklahoma. I am a part of the “Sandwich Generation,” a growing group of Americans aged 40-60 who are grappling with the challenges of caring for both young children and aging parents.
I worry because I know that 70% of people over the age of 65 will need long-term care, and as my parents age I'm afraid that, like most Americans, they won’t have access to high-quality in-home care. If we get to that point—and the odds are that we will—they may have no other choice but to move into a long-term care institution, giving up the home they've worked hard their entire lives to afford.
But I also know that there are solutions—and that’s why it’s so important for Senator McCaskill to hear stories like mine and to make sure our leaders create a long-term care system that safeguards families like mine in Missouri and across the country.
This Wednesday I’ll be delivering this petition to Senator McCaskill to show how many of us are affected by our lack of a long-term care system, both within the Sandwich Generation and outside of it. Will you add your voice to mine and so many others—and join us in asking Senator McCaskill to support Senate Res. 128?
We need a system for long-term care that will meet the needs of both our rapidly aging population and the growing workforce that enables senior citizens to live and age with dignity in their own homes.
Please help ensure that Missourians and all Americans will have access to affordable, quality long-term care by assuming a leadership role in supporting Senate Res.128.
