Starting school before 8 a.m. not only undermines academic achievement but also endangers teenager's health and safety. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association both have published studies that cite the fact that high school students are healthier and perform better when they start their day after 0800 am. Numerous studies show that teens that do not get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, have depression, and engage in unhealthy behaviors like smoking, drinking, and drug use. Studies also show that teens that start school after 8am perform better, have lower drop-out rates, and are happier overall.

Not only do start times effect health and grades, the National Highway Safety and Transportation Department documents that later high school start times equivocates to safer roads, less accidents.

Logistical and financial issues can make it difficult to initiate change.  The success of of Seminole county students takes precedence over the challenge.  Therefore, legislation mandating start times consistent with student health and educational well-being is essential.
