Seminole County Public Schools schedule very little recess for our children. For example, only 30 minutes of recess per week are allowed for some 5th graders. Numerous studies and child development experts agree that recess is just as significant for our children's development, as the structured class time. In fact, recess helps to develop our children emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socially.
In addition to allowing children to blow off steam, some children with ADHD and Autism have trouble functioning properly without recess, because the physical activity regulates their bodies and minds.
A recent study indicates that physical inactivity is just as detrimental to our health as smoking cigarettes. So, the question is: would we condone the schools having our children smoke cigarettes? If the answer is no, than we must allow our children to play more.
Seminole County Schools are stealing the opportunity for our children to learn to socialize, get physical activity and independently solve problems.
Let's allow our kids to be kids!
