Message :

By way of feedback to Sekisui House (the developer), and Westin Hotels (the proposed Hotelier), WE, the signatories to this Petition, being residents of Yaroomba and the Sunshine Coast, and tourists who holiday on the Sunshine Coast, object to an approval for this site that overrides the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014 (the Planning Scheme) in relation to building heights.  This is a unique site and its scenic amenity should be preserved in accordance with the Planning Scheme.

WE, the signatories to this Petition, would agree to a world's best practice, ultra luxury, low rise, eco resort that meets the building height limits contained in the Planning Scheme.

Background :

There had been a previous controversial proposal for this site in 2006 by Lend Lease that had caused enormous angst amongst the local community.  The developer purchased the site from Lend Lease in 2011.   When the Planning Scheme came up for review in 2013, Development Watch (DW) looked very closely at this site on the beachside at Yaroomba as it did not want history to repeat itself.  DW strongly supported the proposed two storey limit placed on the site by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council in the new Planning Scheme.  If the height had been any greater, DW would have included a request in its submission on the Planning Scheme that it be reduced.  The Planning Scheme was launched in May 2014.

The developer sought feedback from DW at four discussion groups but DW declined to attend as it was clear that the developer was not going to attempt to work within the Planning Scheme. DW offered to consult with the developer when it had a proposal ready but the developer has stated it does not have a proposal ready.
