The Problem:  If you want a more inclusive society, you need children to have a more inclusive upbringing.  By segregating children with disabilities, in a classroom, building or school, in the public school system, you are also saying it is okay to segregate these children when they become adults in society.

Why I Care:  As a special education teacher, I saw how IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), although a step in the right direction (change takes time), failed.  For example, I witnessed, time and time again, public school districts and public education administrators, express publicly policies in accordance with IDEA, but in practice these policies were not followed, supported or enforced.  They were purposely swept under the rug, for various reasons, e.g., increase school performance numbers, reduce costs, avoid litigation, etc.  As a teacher myself, any student, with special education services or not, who entered my classroom was given the support necessary to reach their educational goals and objectives, as would be expected of any good teacher past and present.

Impact:  The desegregation of children with disabilities in public schools would result in new federal and state laws, similar to the result(s) of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 1954, and schools would become more inclusive.  Consequently, as a result, society would become more inclusive.  This would probably homogenized teacher training and credentialing and perhaps significantly reduce the costs for people to become teachers.  Also, when a child who had special education support services becomes an adult, they will be entering a more inclusive society, as well as their peers without disabilities.
