Seeking Forgiveness For All states To Forgive PUA Overpayments
Why this petition matters

Millions of unemployed workers were told they were eligible for federal pandemic unemployment benefits and then later found out that the rules had changed, and, through no fault of their own, we're no longer considered eligible after many months of receiving PUA payments.
PUA recipients were never eligible for unemployment the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance was for individuals not covered under traditional unemployment insurance it was for Self-Employed, Gig Economy Workers, and others so to ask for proof of documents really does not make sense these claimants were told they qualified and this program was for them and they were provided benefits not knowing later the program would change and now start asking for proof of eligibility when they were told they were eligible, to begin with.
Now millions are being told they are now ineligible and having to pay back this money they would have never excepted if they knew the rules would have changed putting them in bankruptcy. Many said they would rather skate through savings and use credit cards than be forced into a debt they could never afford to pay back. The payback amount can range from $8,000 to $30,000 or more putting workers and their families in financial hardship which goes against the whole “Build Back Better” mission. We need your help many families will be in ruins this can open the door for more homelessness and food insecurities and garnishments. It’s also noted that those who are told to repay benefits will not be eligible for future unemployment benefits unless repayment is made.
Please we need your help we ask that all states forgive all PUA overpayments made through their traditional unemployment insurance programs. We believe they can forgive the debt in instances of financial hardship at a time when people are struggling to get by and because of the many errors on the part of the unemployment agencies, we can do better and build back better by forgiveness for All PUA Overpayments!
