Fair wages for Private Security Industry workers

We believe that the job that those working in the security industry do is important to the smooth running of our daily lives and they put themselves in danger to keep us safe. We believe that their wages should reflect this.

With the added risks currently facing the UK, including terrorism and the rise of acid attacks, along with cuts to local policing security workers have found themselves in a position that is more dangerous than ever. For this extra danger many workers in the industry have not seen a rise in their pay for many years. We are calling for the Security Industry Authority to bring in legislation like that in Southern Ireland where there is a minimum wage specifically for security industry workers.

In 2017 the security Employment Regulation Order was introduced in Southern Ireland. This legislation guarantees improved pay and conditions for Security officers employed in the private security industry. On the 1st June 2017, employees in the private security industry saw their hourly pay increased more than 19% above minumum wage.

While we see campaigns for rising wages in other under pressure industries the security industry has lagged behind on this and for these dangerous jobs people are paid below the National Living Wage and many employed on zero hour contracts.

Companies buying security through commercial pressures aim to get the best price for the service which means that the wages in the industry become pressured. This commercial pressure has resulted in low wages across the security industry and many people leaving the industry feeling that the job is too dangerous for the pay received.

Having legislation like that seen in Southern Ireland would mean that there was a guaranteed wage for security workers undertaking dagerous work and would mean that the price for a contract would reflect higher wages for the security staff.
