The 99 Bus Route is up for tender, and ceases contract on the 4th April 2020 with Buses of Somerset. As of 5th March, SCC seems positive that there is a replacement available.

As a Student who used to use the service, from Taunton to Chard through the Villages, this would have had a detrimental effect on users who rely on the service daily.

Students who need to access their place of education, Employees who need to access their place of work and more senior residents who need to access local amenities and social events would have all struggled from this cut.

Not to mention the strain on village amenities that will no longer be accessible. Villages such as Combe St. Nicholas, Buckland St. Mary and Staple Fitzpaine will suffer as a result of this. The long term economic value the service has for both Chard and Taunton means it is something worth keeping.

The excuse is that the bus is not used enough, yet the 30 and 99 arrive within 20 minutes of each other and don’t come back again for another two hours.

The SOLUTION to this problem would not be to cut it, but to trial a new timetable. We, the undersigned want to see a reliable and low-cost service that will help residents, the economy and the environment within Chard and surrounding areas.

We would also like to see a new timetable that works with the 30 route, with a bus coming hourly rather than two every other hour.

Let’s make sure the service stays, to get back a simple but strong service for all who rely on it now, and those in years to come.

Please sign this petition. Thank you.
