Place Kensington and Chelsea council under special measures
The tragedy surrounding the events at Grenfell Tower has been extensively reported and an emergency response is now in place with help from voluntary organisations, other London Councils and the government. Given the catastrophic failure in managing not only the decision making process surrounding the refurbishment of Grenfell but also the emergency response and the housing and welfare follow up, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea should be placed under special measures. This power has been used before for cases involving less serious issues that did not involve such an extensive loss of life. It could draw upon the Secretary of State's powers under section 15 of the Local Government Act 1999.
This will not only help restore public confidence ahead of the findings of the Public Inquiry but will ensure valuable documentary evidence is secured and immediate improvements made to the way the council operates in terms of emergency response, the strategic housing function and governance.
Act now by supporting this petition to ensure the safety of those in Kensington and Chelsea.
