End DUP Donor Anonymity

As an 18-year-old first-time voter, I was thrilled to see a massive increase in the youth turnout in the general election.  However, young people across the UK are angered that the Tories are using the votes of socially conservative DUP MPs to stay in power.  But despite the DUP being in such an influential position, they are the only party in the Commons whose donors are anonymous.

The identities of those who bankroll Northern Irish parties is kept secret. But every party in England, Scotland and Wales has to publicly declare who funds it.  It is unacceptable that the DUP is not subject to the same transparency.

In order to maintain public trust in our democratic process, it is of vital importance that the DUP's finances do not continue to be hidden under a veil of secrecy. This January, the DUP voted against a Belfast City Council motion calling for donor transparency.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, James Brokenshire, has the power to change this situation, and reveal all donations to Northern Ireland's political parties since 2014. Despite having made previous commitments over the last seven years, a succession of Tory Secretaries of State have not changed the system.

The Tories' 2017 Northern Ireland manifesto said: "A Conservative government will introduce increased transparency of political donations."  Let's hold them to their word.

We hereby call upon the Secretary of State to end political donor secrecy in Northern Ireland.
