Mortgage companies are now stating that properties are not allowed to rent to people receiving any kind of benefit.

I have worked for the NHS over the past 20 years and now due to a back injury, Fibromyalgia and M.E, I am unable to work full time. I am also a single parent so it's impossible to come up with a full month's rent on my own. I am PIP registered so have limited capability to work. None of this is any fault of my own.

It is almost impossible to find a property that accepts UC as it is. Now mortgage companies are making it impossible. With the lack of social housing in the UK as it is, how long before thousands or millions more people are left homeless. The Government needs to stop mortgage companies adding this clause and actually help people on benefits find properties to rent. We are not allowed to own our own properties but it's fine for us to pay 3x the amount of a mortgage payment each month.

I use to juggle 2 jobs everyday, surviving on 4 hrs sleep per day and this is how our country repays people like me. You would think due to Covid 19, the government would have learnt a bit about the real people that have kept this country going. Stop making the poor, poorer. We are the hardest working people, yet we are not entitled to have a roof over our heads. Think about all the disabled people out there? Do you think they want to be how they are? They are entitled to be homed too. It is pure discrimination!

There are so many different circumstances in which people may need help to get a home. There are just too many to cover. Anyone could walk out of their house and get injured, then have no choice but to claim benefits. In that moment their life changes. Any professional could end up on benefits in a split second, including the person reading this now.

I understand some landlords have problems with tenants. But that is a small minority and not just people on benefits. I have 2 guarantors ready to step in if they ever needed to and in 14 years, they have never needed to. I am a great member of my community, I have never had a criminal record and I treat any rented property I live in with the upmost respect.

Possible solutions.....

Maybe put a vetting system in place so Landlords can check out future possible tenants. I have great references, never missed a rent payment, 2 guarantors and no criminal record but that is not enough and I am still being refused a property to rent. I have no problem with being interviewed. I have always provided clean DBS checks for my employers. Even though there are different circumstances in which people may have a criminal record, so that should be taken into account too.

I just want to take my children to live in a safe environment. I want to start my own little business working from home while I am still capable of doing a small amount of work. I still want to contribute towards my bills and taxes, like thousands of other people in the same position as me.

My last words are again, remember this could be you! No one knows what tomorrow may bring. PLEASE HELP US!
