Introduction

Island Health is a General Medical  Practice (GP) on the Isle of Dogs, East London. The practice has a large team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, alternative practitioners, and others and have been serving the residents of the island with tremendous dedication and earning them a good reputation.

In the 80s, the Island Health Trust built the health centre after a vigorous campaign by the residents.  Tower Hamlets Council paid £700,000 of grants to the trust to build the centre along with help from the London Docklands Development Corporation, as well as a £700,000 loan to the trust which has been paid.

Recently, the trust has lost representation from the residents and current Chair of the Island Health Trust, Suzanne Goodband, paid herself more than £185,000 for “consultancy services relating to charity development, strategy implementation, and property development.

The trust has also increased the service charge for the GPs and forced them to vacate the 1st floor. This approach has already affected the practice’s ability to provide medical care and risks the surgery future.

We want the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP

1. Intervene to save this center, to ensure it continues to provide excellent health care for the residents on the Isle of Dogs.
2. To use his statutory powers to investigate the conduct of the Chair and the Trustees of the Island Health Trust.
3. To review the Trust’s Constitution and include measures to ensure at least 80% of the trustees are from the locality.

We want the Charity Commission

We want the Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Mayor John Biggs

We want the Chair of Island Health Trust, Suzanne Goodband

1. To immediately stop the let of the first floor and reverse the increase in service charges for the GPs and allow them to resume their normal services including using the first floor.

2. To resign with immediate effect for not adhering to the vision of the trust that it was originally intended to be implemented.

3. To return the amount of monies she has taken from the trust if an investigation concludes it was unlawful.
