Charlotte Woolsey started this petition to Secretary of State For Health and Social Care and

In 2006 aged only 19, my life changed forever after a violent episode of vertigo left me bedbound and unable to walk. Numerous GPs appointments, various diagnoses and even an appointment with a Consultant ENT doctor failed to correctly diagnose or resolve my symptoms. It was only after three years of suffering and finally moving to a new GP that I was eventually transferred to the care of the Balance Centre at Medway Hospital. There, under the expertise of Consultant Neurotologist Mr. Surenthiran, I was finally diagnosed with Variant Migraine Balance Disorder (VM). I was placed on medication, provided with sessions of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy and placed on a strict diet eliminating many foods. Due to the specialist care I received I recovered and whilst my condition is lifelong it is now under control and being managed. I have been able to continue to work, get married and have children, all things many people with undiagnosed and uncontrolled VM are unable to do.

My story however is not unique. There are many hundreds of patients the Balance Centre at Medway has helped. I am part of a large group of people who literally owe their life to the Centre and the fantastic care it provides.

The Medway NHS Foundation Trust states on its own website that the Balance Centre is only one of three such centres in the country and is recognised nationally, and increasingly internationally, as a centre of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders.

People come from all over the country to receive the specialist care it provides and yet despite this and all the good it does the Centre is closing later this year. With no alternative provision I dread to think of the position this will leave many people who are suffering in. Variant forms of migraine are not that uncommon and it could easily be you or one of your family members or friends who needs the specialist knowledge provided by the Centre - knowledge that most GPs and ENT doctors do not have.

Please, please, please take a moment to sign this petition asking that the Balance Centre remains open.
