Michelle Halewood started this petition to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP and

The government has a responsibility to help protect us from an industry whose main objective is to find its next generation of drinkers. Research shows that exposing children and young people to alcohol marketing ‘leads them to drink at an earlier age and to drink more than they otherwise would.’ (Institute of Alcohol Studies)

The government has a responsibility to give consumers the information they need so they can make informed decisions about alcohol the same way it does for tobacco products.

The direct cost of dealing with alcohol use through the NHS,  Police and Welfare is £4 billion pounds a year (Institute of Economic Affairs) The social implications of family break up and divorce, domestic abuse, unemployment, homelessness and financial problems.

The long term health risks associated with alcohol are liver cancer, liver disease, mouth cancer, head and neck cancer, breast and bowel cancer, stroke, dementia, infertility, pancreatitis amd high blood pressure. This is not what I want for my children.

The Committee on Carcinogenicity has written a statement 69 pages long ‘on the consumption of alcohol beverages and the risk of cancer.’ These new studies show that even people who consume low levels of alcohol have a greater risk of getting cancer than those who don’t drink at all. Like smoking the more alcohol you drink the greater the cancer risk. The UK government says that alcohol use is the 3rd leading risk factor for death and disability after smoking and obesity and connect it to 60 medical conditions.

I want The Children and Families Act 2014 to be amended to allow the Secretary of State to regulate the packaging of alcohol like it does with tobacco. I want to see Government Warnings on alcohol packaging such as:

Alcohol is related to 60 medical conditions including breast, colon, mouth and throat cancer’.

Its been done for tobacco let’s push the Alcohol Industry to do the same by giving the Secretary of State the powers to regulate the industry and adopt new labels. Protect our children young people and allow us all to make informed decisions about the impact of alcohol use.
