Sharon Wiggins started this petition to Secretary of State For Health and Social Care

As a care worker I am a key worker, care staff are paid minimum wage however, in this role you are required to wear many hats, care staff are primarily genuinely caring in nature and fulfil their role giving 100% always, we are companions, cooks, cleaners, teachers, we handle medication including controlled drugs, we use specialised equipment including lifesaving equipment, we understand various conditions and are the first to notice when one of our clients is unwell, we are secretaries booking appointments, chaperones for clients to attend these appointments, we ensure all of the clients health needs are taken care of and liaise with other professions, we can communicate in all forms of non-verbal communication, we promote equality and dignity and campaign for greater understanding and awareness in our communities, to be able to do all of this we will undertake rigorous training and qualifications updating these yearly.

We make sacrifices such as working 14 hour days so that our clients have the quality care that they deserve and need, we sacrifice spending time with our own families and miss out on many family occasions due to a 24 hour care rota, we are on call, work unsociable hours and shifts but do not receive any subsidised pay, pay grades, shift allowance or an overtime rate, sometimes working over 14 hours on a Weekend day for minimum wage but we do it because we care about the people we support.

Care staff are some of the lowest paid workers nationally, we feel that it is time to change this, it is time that care staff received a wage that reflected their responsibilities, duties and level of skill/qualifications, we are after all a skilled workforce.

If you are a care worker, know a care worker or agree that care staff should be paid their worth then please sign this petition and let’s see some change in the way care staff are rewarded for the selfless career they pursue.
