Children’s exposure to online pornography has been linked to the disturbing rape culture recently uncovered in the school’s sex scandal. Soma Sara, who founded Everyone’s Invited, the website where pupils have been sharing their testimonies, has spoken out about the insidious influence of porn. “It reinforces boys’ idea of entitlement over women’s bodies,” she said in a recent interview, adding: “It’s very toxic, yet it’s ingrained at such a young age.” Robert Halfon, the chairman of the Commons Education Select Committee, also pinpointed online porn culture as one of the causes of misogynist and aggressive sexual behaviour amongst teens.

Why has the Government not implemented regulations - both for pornography websites and the platforms that distribute their material, such as Google? Currently, the onus is solely on parents to protect their children from the damaging content freely available online - an impossible task.

The solution is simple: the Government needs to make it illegal for pornography to be openly accessible online. Age verification should be mandatory and the platforms that enable the global distribution of pornography - from the darkest, seediest corners on earth directly to our children’s devices - need to be held accountable, too. The shopkeeper who sells a top-shelf magazine to a child would be prosecuted (for far less hardcore material) - why should Google be any different?

This is an issue that affects every child in the country. If you care about it, please sign this petition to help put this issue on the Government's agenda.
