Americans nationwide are struggling to keep their families safe and protect whatever income they can manage despite significant state lockdown mandates and a bungled federal response.  Our own military is adding to this struggle by ignoring the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing to move their personnel worldwide without regard to the health of their service members, their service members’ dependent families, and every civilian they come in contact with during their unnecessary journey.

According to a recent article published in Forbes magazine, 0.5% of the US population have had a confirmed case of COVID-19 while the military environment fosters a far higher transmission rate that’s led to 8% of military members having a confirmed case of COVID-19. To make matters worse, due to the young and fit population, military members are far less likely to show symptoms while still being just as infectious, rendering most screening applications used in the civilian world useless to guard against their undetectable COVID carriers. States with large numbers of military personnel like California and Texas are facing the repercussions of these super spreaders with statewide transmission rates far inflated from the national average.

Despite the Secretary of Defense’s guidance that only those designated as mission essential, those in extreme hardship, or those needed to fulfill a humanitarian mission proceed to or from a high transmission rate duty station; the Service Secretaries have delegated approval authority to the lowest and most junior commands, citing nearly every position as mission essential, and require only that the losing and gaining command agree to the transfer.  This nonchalant attitude puts every civilian that comes into contact with a military family or any surface they’ve touched or enclosed space they’ve inhabited during their multi day move- stopping at countless restaurants, gas stations, hotels and more- at risk of contracting COVID-19.  As civilians, we tend to be in more vulnerable age groups, we do not enjoy the medical benefits of military members, and we will not be vaccinated as early.

This is not just a risk for civilians though.  Military members have to risk numerous non-essential encounters with people across the nation, have to allow multiple strangers into their home to pack away their belongings, and then to deliver and unpack their belongings- all without any of these personnel being tested for COVID-19 at any time. All of this exposure to report to a job where most have been told to remain at home and do their work remotely, which could have easily been accomplished at their old duty station without so much risk to themselves, their families, and unknowing civilians.

The government is imposing life-altering restrictions on us all in the name of public health. The governments largest employer, the Department of Defense, should not get carte blanche to ignore these restrictions while the rest of us struggle with the ability to support our families while forced to risk the possibility of being infected by an asymptomatic member of the military. If you support the military, take a moment now to sign this petition urging the Secretary of Defense, the President, the President- elect, and Vice President-elect to take this pandemic seriously and only force service members whose physical presence is critical to mission essential operations to move to new duty stations. If you don’t support the military, please take a moment to protect yourself by signing this survey to reduce the number of super spreader asymptomatic personnel you may have to come into contact with.
