Mr. Ban Ki- moon
Secretary General of the United Nations
New York, NY 10017
Dear Mr. Secretary General,
We are a group of gender specialists working with the United Nations. We would like to bring to your notice the recent report titled “The Lost Agenda: Gender Parity in Senior UN Appointments” (December 14, 2015) that highlights an alarming trend in lack of compliance to the principle of gender equality at the senior levels within the UN. The fact that only sixteen percent of UN senior staff appointed in 2015 to positions of USG and ASG are women defies the very core of our collective commitment to gender parity within key decision making positions in the UN.
We call on you to give this matter your most urgent and immediate attention.
We propose appointing a high level independent panel tasked with finding innovative strategies and making recommendations to redress the systemic failures, so clearly illustrated by the 2015 record, in attaining gender parity at the UN's senior most decision-making levels.
Further, we also urge respective Member States to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality by nominating qualified women to the senior leadership positions in the United Nations.
As concerned people who are committed to strengthening UN commitments on gender equality in field operations, promoting equal representation of women and men in field teams is a central element of our advocacy. In order for our efforts to be meaningful and have the credibility they deserve, it is essential that there is demonstrated compliance to this principle at the senior most levels within the UN.
We look to you to address this and make it a priority.
