Stop Caning Of Gay Men In Banda Aceh

We are deeply disturbed by reports that two young men in Banda Aceh province are going to be caned because they have been convicted of the "crime" of homosexuality.
Homosexuality is not a crime in Indonesia. This punishment is being administered by a council of regional, self-appointed religious fundamentalists who do not have the authority of the democratically elected Indonesian government.
We respectfully call on the government of Indonesia to intervene to prevent this punishment being carried out.
This case has been identified by Human Rights Watch as torture and we believe that it is also a violation of human rights. We call on the government to release these men immediately and ensure their safety.
