I want coffee shops to post a sign to remind patrons to use mugs and plates.
I make a concerted effort to ask for my coffee in a mug. Rarely am I given the choice and sometimes I forget to ask; I am human.
The baristas say they are too busy to ask and people want disposable anyway. (Actual conversation had at a Second Cup with a barista as she reached for a disposable cup to serve my coffee order and I quickly and urgently interjected “Please serve it in a mug, I’m staying”. I then engaged conversation about asking patrons .)
I want all coffee shops to post a sign reminding customers to ask for a mug and plate, if having food. I want it to stand at the cash register and I want it to post how much waste is created each day by coffee cups!
Every small action counts in a big way.
Do you know the amount of garbage generated each day by disposable cups - please sit down for this - 2,739,726! That is 1 billion a year divided by 365, and it is estimated over a billion disposable, non recyclable cups a year go to landfill so 2,739,726 is a “conservative figure”, if one can say that.
If half the consumers asked for a mug for their coffee, each day, we would save approximately 1,315,313 cups going to landfill - A DAY!! How easy is that!!
Please join my petition get the signs up in coffee shops and become a responsible coffee, tea, beverage consumer. If we all do our part change is easy!
