Our daughter was a student at GHS. As a sophomore she was sexually harassed. A male would pin her to the wall in the hallway with a hand on either side of her body and tell her she should go out with him. This happened continually. She reported this and the solution was that the next quarter they would be in different classes. The next quarter she was again placed in a class with him. She complained and nothing was done. We, her parents then complained and we were told nothing could be done about it because the class assignments had been made and we should have made our preferences known. We were disgusted that the school did not follow through with the plan that THEY had made and would do nothing to make sure our daughter did not have to be in class with a boy who had sexually harassed her.
As a senior, a classmate wrote a disgusting rap poem about our daughter including a statement that she takes it in the a**. This was shared with others at school and our daughter was humiliated as the rap was brought to her attention in class, in the halls and out side on campus. We reported this to the school multiple times and to multiple people including Mr Howard. There was no response by Mr Howard until we wrote a letter to all members of the school board. A meeting was held with a vice principal. This vice principal did nothing but try to cover her own behind. She was no help at all. The boy who wrote the poem and his mother were at the meeting. She was a wonderful woman and it was this mother, my husband and I who made the meeting a constructive learning situation for this boy in the hopes that he learned the impact of what he did. The representative of GHS was USELESS.
Finally, our daughter has an IEP. The IEP program at GHS was a joke. At one time she had SIC different IEP teachers in the course of 2 months. We had to harass Mr Howard to finally meet with him. He apologized for not meeting with us sooner. He told us how busy he was and named several things he was busy with....one of which was "meeting with the media". What an arrogant self important man. If you are not a AP student or an athlete, you are NOTHING to Mr Ted Howard.
He cancelled French as of our daughter's senior year"for budget reasont". This left her with no way to complete her language requirement in order to be eligible for college. She had to take two quarters of Community College language on her own time and we had to bear the cost of the books and other supplies. The following year this wonderful school had a special Spanish class for two athletes. They could afford a special spanish teacher for these athletes, but could not continue with French to allow our daughter to be eligible for college.
I know this is a lot of information, but Mr Howard is a self important man with no desire to help anyone except his precious athletes and AP students. Anyone else is just a bother. Thanks for letting me vent. My husband and I hold anger to this day!

This principal is incompetent. We had questions over my son's grade in a class where his grade went from a B to an F on the last day of school and then the teacher resigned. We wanted to meet with his teacher. He scheduled 3 meetings (at 7 am). Ted was always late and no teacher. I did get an earful from other parents while waiting in the office. We transfered our son. I'm still angry 7 years later. Completely unprofessional.

My mother and I both attended Garfield High School. No High School can be a perfect place, because kids can be cruel, but I don't recall having to face this sort of adult callousness and irresponsibility. These recent rapes cast a pall over what has been a proud legacy. Garfield has become a joke.

My children will be at Garfield in a few years; I don't them at a school where the staff has no regard for students safety of well-being.
