Petition for Magnolia South Synthetic Playing Field

Families of the Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle ask the Seattle City Council and Seattle Parks and Recreation to move ahead with a synthetic sports field at Magnolia South.

BUDGET: The city budget, passed in November 2016, funded three playfield projects: Brighton, Soundview, and an unnamed third project. This means funding is in place to give Magnolia the synthetic field it was led to expect three years ago with the creation of the Seattle Parks Disctrict, a metropolitan park district, approved by Seattle voters with strong support from the Magnolia neighborhood.

BACKGROUND: In 2014, acting Parks and Recreation Supt. Christopher Williams responded to former Council Member Jean Godden’s Statement of Legislative Intent regarding playfields by stating that synthetic turf would be installed at multiple fields — including Magnolia South Playfields and Queen Anne (Big Howe).

Those installations did not occur.

NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPORT: Central West Seattle district is under served with regard to lit, synthetic sports fields. There is one field shared with SPU by all of Magnolia and Queen Anne neighborhoods. Magnolia residents came out in large numbers in 2013 and 2014, supporting the Smith Cove Park project in the Park District measure as well as requesting better playfields for their neighborhood sports leagues. (Magnolia had the largest number of public comments among all  constituent groups during the Legacy Committee/Park District work).

The Magnolia community has worked and waited for this improvement. It is time for it to happen.
