Mayor Durkan, we support the opening of Cal Anderson Park & making Pike/Pine safe for all

Capitol Hill has endured a tremendous amount of crisis this year, particularly in and around Cal Anderson Park and the neighboring East Precinct. It's time to repair our neighborhood and make it safe and welcoming for all.

Cal Anderson Park has been technically closed to the public since July 2020. Maintenance services have stopped while many experiencing homelessness and/or mental crisis have taken occupancy. Without normal use and maintenance, the park has become an unsafe and hazardous space.

While businesses and residents have worked together to take down boards, remove graffiti, and reopen their businesses to serve the neighborhood, the East Precinct has barricaded and fortified its exterior. It's time for the East Precinct to join its neighbors by removing the cement walls, fences, and boards.

By signing this letter you support the Mayor and City Council to do the following:

  1. Open and maintain the park so that it is a safe and welcoming space for all.
  2. Connect those experiencing homelessness to services and safe housing.
  3. Remove the barricades from the East Precinct.

As elected officials, you represent the public - the public wants its space back for the use of the community. We need them now more than ever.
