Is My Dress Code More Important Than My Education? Change TISD Dress Codes!
All right, so if you're here right now reading this, you must want to do something about the TISD dress code? Well, I hope that's true because I need as much help as I can get. So we're going to talk about the rules that make no sense what so ever and should be deleted or should be changed.
For boys, hair length can only reach their collar, which is definitely weird considering the fact that hair doesn't distract anyone. Unless someone waves it directly in your face, because, then, we can talk. If hair length really did distract students, then girls would have to cut their hair short, too. Another detail about hair in Tomball independent school district is that we, students, are not allowed to dye our hair any color unless the color is natural. No green, no purple, no dark red, no blue, and more. We can't use our clothing to express ourselves so why can we also not use our hair??? Now, I do understand that bright colors can be distracting to students who are trying to work, but, come on! Honestly, who's gonna look at someone's hair and say, "Dang, I can't focus. His/her hair is blinding me."
Still on the topic of ridiculous rules that should be changed or deleted, let's get into clothing. Now, girls are not allowed to wear spaghetti straps which kind of irks me. I understand if the top is too low and the girl's body is sort of exposed, but most of the time we get called out for wearing regular tank tops. Now, if we're wearing a regular tank top and all the skin you can see is our collarbone, neck, and shoulders, what's so wrong? Back to shoulders, let's look at shoulder less and off-shoulder shirts. The only things you're exposing with these kinds of shirts are your neck, shoulders, and your collarbone. Again, what's so wrong with neck, shoulders, and collarbone? Another strange rule is that we're not allowed to wear see-through shirts, which, I can understand but if we're wearing something other than a bra underneath it, it should be fine. Right? Then, there's the rule about no bra straps should be visible. I honestly think this is one of the TRULY RIDICULOUS dress code rules. Like, sure, if we can see most of your bra then I understand that people could find that distracting but is your bra strap itself really so distracting?
Another ridiculous dress code rule that should be changed is the rule about no rips or tears being visible above the knees. So, I think this rule should be completely deleted because it's not like you're showing your butt or your private areas. But those rules should also highlight those jeans with the holes the size of half your thigh and make sure that those jeans are not allowed. So holes should be allowed as long as they aren't bigger than a golf ball and as long as they don't completely expose your thigh. Then, there's the rule about no jewelry or trinkets that are noisy or distracting. Now, no one follows this rule anyways but I'd just like to address how ridiculous it is. Jewelry and trinkets are other ways to express ourselves or wear a part of ourselves to school. If we aren't even allowed to do that, heck, you might as well give us uniforms like in boarding schools. There's also the rule about no sweatbands, bandannas, and hats/caps/hoods inside the building. Personally, I always thought this rule was completely absurd. Why can't we wear this kind of stuff? "Oh, because it's disrespectful to the American Flag." What? I really don't understand how being warm disrespects the American Flag, guys. Did I forget to mention how ridiculous the short shorts rule? Like, how do girls find shorts that are fashionable and not "too short"? Because, please, I'd like the person who created dress codes to go shopping for stylish shorts that aren't "distracting".
So, that pretty much wraps up the most absurd and ridiculous dress code rules in the TISD handbook. If you agree with the message that this petition is sending, PLEASE SIGN IT!
