Help save bus route 16 SD68
It has come to attention that Bus route 16, SD68 (Rutherford to Frank J Ney) is up for cancellation on March 3 2021. After actively participating in the HASTe program, Active and Safe Routes to School Program and Active Travel Committee to work with decision makers, law enforcement agencies and community partners to explore barriers and generate solutions, We are quite surprised by this decision.
After all the programs, the safe route to the school for these students chosen was the bus. The bus is full daily, sometimes having to make 2 trips. One of the highest rider ships in the district and this is during COVID, where parents are scared to have their child on the bus.
The drive to 5 option that was suggested in the school travel plan, best routes map is dangerous and has very limited parking on Entwhistle. This is already an unsafe pickup/drop off area that will only get worse with the cancellation of this bus route. The CLOSEST bus stop (breonna) to the school is a brisk 25 minute walk for an adult. Add in a young child and it takes much longer. In addition the are no sidewalks along most of the routes.
The school parking lot is already unsafe due to high traffic and long line ups of cars waiting to get back up Williamson to Hammond bay. The school sends emails out on a regular bases to parents in regards to safe pickup/drop off options. We would therefore like to know what the SD68 transportation department plans to do to eliminate this traffic burden, as the current parking amd transportation plan was designed with a bus route being in place amd will therefore no longer be fit for purpose.
Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools says they recognize the value of public participation, value the wisdom of our community and is committed to creating appropriate opportunities for students, staff, Indigenous and broad community involvement through a meaningful engagement process, Yet no one has had any opportunity to discuss this cancellation. It has only come to attention 2 days before the meeting of the proposed cancellation.
This is a very disheartening decision and as parents we are requesting more information be provided on what the safe routes will be BEFORE the cancellation of the bus route and how the additional traffic will be handled at the already unsafe areas.
