Preserve Access to Youth Care Workers in New West Schools

The New West School District recently announced changes to our Child and Youth Care Workers' jobs. We have Child and Youth Care Workers in four of our schools right now, and the District identified a need for CYCW's in our other elementary and middle schools.
Instead of improving staffing levels to meet this need, the District is redefining the jobs for our four Child and Youth Care Workers. Each person will be expected to split their time between three schools, with no increase in hours.
This may provide the support needed by students at the schools that don't have CYCW's right now, but it does so at the expense of the students at the schools that, until now, everyone has agreed need a dedicated Child and Youth Care Worker. These schools will see their hours slashed by 50-60%.
Our Child and Youth Care Workers are a critical resource. They help students who are hungry, who cope with disorders like anxiety, who witness or experience abuse at home, who might fall through the cracks. These students deserve all the support we can give them. Taking away from one vulnerable population to provide for another is not the answer.
Parents are also concerned these cuts will impact the Breakfast Programs our Child and Youth Care Workers administer.
We call on the New Westminster Board of Education to use the $295,560 in administrative savings the Province has redirected to our District to find a better solution; one that will meet the needs of all students in New Westminster without compromising support to anyone, and without affecting the Breakfast Programs currently operating in our schools.
