Thomas Langan started this petition to scrippsD1@michigan.gov and

Over the past 24 months, Michigan’s natural gas companies -including Consumers Energy – have raised their Gas Distribution charges by over 60%!  This is the fee that they charge us for natural gas to flow through the pipelines to our homes and businesses. This is currently significantly higher than the cost of the gas itself!

These companies are public utility monopolies – literally the ONLY way consumers can get natural gas to their homes and businesses. The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) is the State agency that hears their rate increase requests and sets these rates. They are supposed to represent and protect us from outrageous increases like these by the monopolies. What the heck happened here!

Please sign this petition to MPSC Commissioners Tremaine Phillips, Katherine Peretick and Dan Scripps, to demand that they take immediate action to (a) roll back gas distribution charges across Michigan for all customers to the rates that were in effect on January 1, 2018, and (b) re-schedule the massive rate increases from 2018 through 2020 to be phased in pro-rata from 2022 through 2032.  That’s about 6% per year over the next 10 years instead of 60% all at once, and a very fair increase to maintain pipelines that are already installed and paid for.

Michigan residents and businesses can use these savings to recover from the economic effects of COVID, and they need it now more than these monopolies’ shareholders need fatter dividends. C’mon MPSC!
