Immediately Stop All Construction at Hopi Elementary School

SUSD voters approved $229 million in taxpayer funds to be spent on aging school facilities in our district. This should have been an exciting time for our community.
Instead, SUSD is railroading through a rebuild of Hopi Elementary School - the first bond rebuild project. The plans have been made without stakeholder input. The drawings seem better suited for a dated strip mall than for a school. They reflect no innovation or consideration of optimal learning environments. The design does not integrate with the established neighborhood in any way. The final plans were unveiled on Wednesday night (9/27) at a meeting where questions and concerns were endless and answers were few. The construction fences were placed on Saturday (9/30) and construction projects are starting immediately.
It appears that the District has not coordinated with the City of Phoenix or adjacent neighbors regarding hydrology and storm run-off concerns (in a neighborhood immediately south of Camelback Mountain and significantly affected by storm flooding), traffic concerns, design review or permitting. The list of the things that have not been considered is too long to include in a brief change.org petition.
Residents and neighbors have vocally opposed these plans. The Board must act IMMEDIATELY to cease all construction-related activities while it addresses these very serious deficiencies and concerns with adjacent property owners, stakeholders, the City of Phoenix and other concerned citizens.
Continuing to spend taxpayer dollars on a project with so many questions and concerns is beyond irresponsible. Voters approved those dollars, and expect them to be spent responsibly and appropriately.
If you are a SUSD voter or stakeholder - living in the Hopi boundaries or elsewhere in the district, please sign this petition today. It doesn't matter whether you have children in SUSD schools - these are your tax dollars. Eight schools are scheduled to be rebuilt with these bond funds, and this process is flawed and outrageous.
Time is of the essence. The district has stated construction activities will start immediately and will be expedited during the week of fall break (10/9 - 10/13). The next Board meeting is on October 17. We cannot wait that long for action. There must be an emergency Board meeting called NOW to address this.
SUSD Governing Board Members - STOP all construction related activities now and do this the right way.
