Trista Swift started this petition to Scottsdale preparatory academy administration and

Truth, Beauty, Goodness. These three simple words are the cornerstone of our academy. Mr. Maloney is a teacher at Scottsdale Prep who exemplifies all three of these virtues. What could be more truthful than a teacher who truly gets to know each and every one of his students? What could be more beautiful than a teacher who puts his students and his coworkers before himself? Who could be an example of more good than a teacher who has donated his own money to the drama department, has offered to give up his own pay in order to keep other staff members employed when budgets were tightened due to Covid -19, has donated his coaching salary to the Athletic Department and has volunteered for a tremendous amount of school dances, athletic games and fine art events?

On May 28, the day of Senior  graduation, Mr. Maloney was fired after being assured of the continuation of his employment for the 2021-2022 school year and turning down another teaching opportunity based on that assurance. In  March, Mr. Maloney was informed that his classes would decrease. He offered to resign at that time if the school did not want him to come back next year. He was told that his employment would continue at Scottsdale Prep. The school was aware of his offer to teach elsewhere yet continued to make him believe he would be back next year. This is the opposite of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. To fire him after assuring him of his place in the Scottsdale Prep family strikes many of us, the families of Scottsdale Prep, as disingenuous. Mr. Maloney was informed that his employment was being terminated because "he is a liability". To this, I question, what exactly has he done that makes him a liability? If he is truly a liability then why wouldn't the school administration implement clear cut guidelines to guide teachers?

I think it speaks volumes that the school has fired Mr. Maloney for being a “liability,” yet is keeping, and even  promoting,  a teacher who called a student a derogatory term. I would be much more concerned about the liability of that individual instead of Mr. Maloney.

Mr. Maloney is one of the most beloved teachers in the school. The community’s love for Mr. Maloney is evidenced by the 2020 yearbook being dedicated to him. He is someone who students trust and care about. Students are advised to discuss issues with a trusted teacher. Mr. Maloney has been that trusted teacher to myself  and to many  other students. Why should the school fire  someone the parent and student community trusts and loves?

Mr. Maloney has even offered  to simply be an after school athletic coach at no pay so that he can still be there for the students who rely on him. That request has been denied.

My desire in creating this petition is to help the school realize that we want Mr. Maloney back. It is truly devastating to see such an amazing individual unfairly fired. This firing is not only unjust but sets a bad example for the great heart students and the entire community. My intent is not  to tear down Scottsdale Prep nor it’s leadership, but to utilize the morals the school has helped develop within me. I am a 2021 graduate of  Scottsdale Prep and I love the school but, like anything, I think there are many things that could be improved upon. My siblings and friends still attend this school and they deserve to have such an exceptional teacher and human being there as Mr. Maloney. This is a chance for the school to improve the relationships they have with the students and community. Please sign this petition and share why you want Mr. Maloney back and teaching at Scottsdale Prep, what he has done for you and why you feel this error should be rectified! Please continue to call and email the school regarding the undeserved firing of Mr. Maloney. You can express your feelings to Headmaster Brett Gilfillan (bgilfillan@scottsdaleprep.org), assistant headmaster Rebeca Michaels (rmichaels@scottsdaleprep.org), feedback@greatheartsaz.org or any other individual you know of who can effect a change.

Please share this petition and send it to great heart students, families and friends. Follow the Instagram @petitionforryanmaloney. Thank you.
