Please share - consulting on care charges in Edinburgh

Scotland Against the Care Tax

May 22, 2015 — Dear Friend,
Scotland Against the Care Tax is encouraging all its supporters to contribute towards a new consultation launched by Edinburgh Council as it seeks to update its polices on charging disabled people for care and support in line with Self Directed Support. Many other councils have introduced these changes without consultation and we are encouraged that Edinburgh at least is asking for opinions.

You do not need to be an Edinburgh resident or currently paying care charges to respond. If you are not currently doing this, you may or members of your family may be in the future. Do not let this opportunity pass to shape local council policy on charges.

We are asking those who respond to answer the questions as they see fit but are suggesting that they use or adapt a standard text answer for question 1 which outlines a general position against Care Charging.

“People who use social care do not do so out of choice. Access to social care is fundamental to many disabled and older people's ability to play a full and active part as members of their community, to be an equal citizen. I do not believe that anyone should have to pay for the privilege of exercising their human rights.
“This charge is not a 'contribution' - it is not voluntary - it is a tax. It is a tax on people who happen to depend on social care support. Most of us living in a civilised society accept the responsibility that this should be funded through income tax and the Council Tax.
“I strongly believe that levying an extra tax on people who use social care is wrong and is unfair in principle and in practice.”
