We the undersigned believe that the Scottish Government should bring back Ancient Greek for National Qualifications (National 5 and Highers), which was discontinued in 2015, and start offering Modern Greek in Scottish National Qualifications as soon as possible. We believe this is necessary for four key reasons:

a) to benefit children of Greek and Cypriot origin, living in Scotland, feel welcome in Scotland and help them connect with their cultural background, strengthening cultural exchanges and multiculturalism in contemporary Scottish society,

b) promote scholarship and science in Scotland: Scottish young people with Highers in Ancient and/or Modern Greek can access the richness of Greek literature and Culture (of more than 2000 years of output in Natural and Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts), and they can benefit from educational and research opportunities in Greece.

c) Ancient Greek and Modern Greek are offered as A levels in England. Currently pupils in Scotland who wish to be examined in Ancient Greek and Modern Greek so as to gain a University entry qualification need to travel long distances with a significant monetary expense and effort for them and their families.

d) Greek (both Ancient and Modern) according to recent studies help the development of brain activities and intellectual growth in a unique way (Eric A. Havelock, The Alphabet and the Brain: the Lateralization of Writing, Springer: 1988). More recent studies highlight the benefits of learning Greek for the psychoeducational abilities of children and in reducing dyslexia. (Vekiari, D., Tsegos, I. & Papadakis, T. The effect of learning Greek historical orthography on the visual and perceptual abilities of the children. Ann Gen Psychiatry 5, S152 (2006) doi:10.1186/1744-859X-5-S1-S152; Chanock, Kate. (2006).
