The City of Edinburgh Council Needs Proper Funding

  • The Scottish Government is the main funder of Scottish Councils and has cut funding to Scottish Councils year on year for the past decade. In 2015 Scottish government funding to councils made up 60% of their revenues. In 2018 this funding had dropped to 55% of their revenue requirements and continues to fall.

This means Edinburgh has endured £250 million of budget cuts in the last five years, will face £41 million of cuts in the coming financial year and a predicted £106 million in the following three years.  This has led to a huge loss of jobs and services.

The Westminster Government have cut the funding to the Scottish budget by 1.65% since 2013 but the funding the Scottish government provides to Scottish local Government budgets have fallen by 6.92% since 2013.

This means that Scottish Councils have taken the brunt of austerity cuts in the Scottish Public Sector.

We call on the Scottish Government and all opposition parties to look urgently at the harsh and damaging impact of spending reductions being proposed in every community and for them to work together to provide a significant increase in funding to Councils to enable them to provide safe and quality services.
